First Contact With The Enemy

**********CLASSIFIED**********

To: General Price

From: F.C. Armstrong

General Price, at 0840 the lead elements of my division made contact with two regiments of enemy cavalry guarding the bridge along the pike across the Deer River. We have identified the two regiments as the 7th Tennesse and 11th Illinois of the 3rd Division. We estimate their numbers to be around 300 men. We have not sighted any further units comming down the pike to the West, or the railroad lines from the North or South. I am deploying my division to meet these units. I do not expect to be held up for very long. They have left the bridge open and decided to defend the approaches to the bridge. I will continue with my orders and disrupt the Federal rail lines.
